You really cant't go wrong with any of the wines produced by Dynamic duo Tim and Bec Duffy at their boutique Holm Oak winery at Rowella in northern Tasmania's Tamay Valley. all their estate grown wines have a vibrancy and drinkability that makes them stand out from the crowd. I loved their 2010 Sauvignon Blanc but the 2011 is, if anything, an even better wine; fruit driven with tropical fruit and gooseberry notes and some hints of complexity added by fermentation in old oak barrels. A crisp, zingy, refreshing wine with just 12% alcohol that will be perfect for summer supping.
Holm Oak are located in what I playfully refer to as the ‘Riverland of Tasmania’ a phrase coined by Jim Chatto of Peppertree Wines for the warmer western Tamar Valley (west of the river), which can see earlier picking dates than the east. However, each vineyard is different, of course, so this is just a jest name, but I kind of like it. The Duffy’s so their thing on the 12 hectare plot that was established in 1983.
Highly fragrant with that appealing lemon blossom and green apple sweetness and stippled with lemongrass and pepper tang. The palate is slippery with higher residual sugar texture, but festooned with mandarin acidity that lifts with mineral elements and draws the sweet appley nature of the wine long. Finds super balance that feels right for these sweeter styles; seems almost Germanic, not that that’s the be all and end all, but hits sweet/acid heights without overdoing one or the other. A great style impression from Tasmania.
Tim and Bec Duffy are a young couple - him a viticulturist, her a winemaker - producing some of the best cool-climate wines coming out of Tasmania. They're based in the Tamar Valley and make wines with personality and intensity. This is an excellent young Pinot made using wild yeast and basket pressing, with real purity of fruit but also some impressive textural elements. If you haven't tried a Holm Oak wine yet, they're worth checking out.
