Holm Oak are located in what I playfully refer to as the ‘Riverland of Tasmania’ a phrase coined by Jim Chatto of Peppertree Wines for the warmer western Tamar Valley (west of the river), which can see earlier picking dates than the east. However, each vineyard is different, of course, so this is just a jest name, but I kind of like it. The Duffy’s so their thing on the 12 hectare plot that was established in 1983. Highly fragrant with that appealing lemon blossom and green apple sweetness and stippled with lemongrass and pepper tang. The palate is slippery with higher residual sugar texture, but festooned with mandarin acidity that lifts with mineral elements and draws the sweet appley nature of the wine long. Finds super balance that feels right for these sweeter styles; seems almost Germanic, not that that’s the be all and end all, but hits sweet/acid heights without overdoing one or the other. A great style impression from Tasmania.
